A visit to the quaint island Village of Sandhamn
We took yet another two-hour boat ride, this time to the village of Sandhamn. The ride went east through the Stockholm Archipelago (island group) almost all the way to the island of Sandön where we found the beautiful village and small harbor.
As we disembarked, we found a few tiny shops, restaurants, cafes, and a town of small summer cottages. Since we went in September, the town was quiet with not much to do but explore the town and harbor. Most of the cottages in the town are summer homes, so most residents were already gone for the season.
We did, however, find the best restaurant we have been to since we moved to Sweden. The Seglarrestaurangen, located in the Sandhamn Seglarhotell, is decorated in light blue and white with a nautical theme, fitting for the gorgeous view of the harbor! The menu includes locally caught seafood along with other Scandinavian entrée options. The special was a fresh catch of the day in a creamy gravy with pureed potatoes and spinach, topped with dill. It was absolutely delicious!
After such a filling meal, we couldn’t help but walk the island to explore. We took the paths through the cottages and up the hill to overlook the harbor from the rooftops. The view was amazing! We continued further into the island and later back down to a small beach looking out at the Baltic Sea. (Unfortunately, it was too cold to swim.) Our walk continued along the shoreline back to the village and harbor. We walked through a couple more shops and back to the dock to the boat for our return trip.
Although chilly, the village of Sandhamn was just absolutely gorgeous! It is definitely worth another visit in the summer when it is warmer, and more ships will be open.
