Moderna Museet and ArkDes
The Moderna Museet and ArkDes, two great museums in one! Both museums occupy the same building making it easy to see both during the same visit. Moderna Museet, also known as the Modern Art Museum, occupies the left side of the building with special exhibitions on the lower two levels. The ArkDes, also known as Architecture Museum, on the other hand, occupies the right side of the building.
Moderna Museet
The Moderna Museet features an eclectic collection of modern art from the 20th and 21st centuries. Collections include paintings, sculptures, photographs, and films are from various artists around the globe. Some well-known artists also featured are Andy Warhol and Pablo Picasso. Galleries and pieces are changed regularly, so there is always something new to see.
ArkDes
ArkDes currently features the works of the famous Swedish architect Sigurd Lewerentz. The collection of his works includes sketches, floor plans, artwork, materials, reference materials, and photographs of buildings. These works are displayed in several galleries over half of the ArkDes museum floor. The other half of ArkDes showcases the Architecture of Sweden, a display of miniature models of Swedish architecture going back to the 9th century, The Craft of Swedish Game Design, Library, a study room, and the Family ArkDes, a play area for the little ones.
The Moderna Museet and ArkDes museums are located on the small island of Skeppsholmen across from downtown Stockholm. You can easily reach the museums by walking across a bridge or there is a bus. Admission is free for both museums, but for an additional fee you can view the special exhibitions. The museum includes a gift shop, café, and a cafeteria style restaurant with a fantastic view of the island Djurgården.
