Warwick Castle by Day, Rick Rolled at Ludlow by Night
There are travel days you carefully plan, and then there are days that surprise you in the best possible ways. Our visit to Warwick Castle and Ludlow Castle combined medieval history, beautiful English countryside, and an unforgettable evening of live music inside the ruins of a centuries-old castle. It was one of those rare days where every stop offered something completely different.
A Day at Warwick Castle
Our morning began at Warwick Castle, one of England’s best-preserved medieval castles. Originally built in 1068 by William the Conqueror as a wooden motte-and-bailey fortification, the castle gradually evolved into the magnificent stone fortress visitors see today. By 1604, it had transitioned from a military stronghold into an elegant country house while still retaining its impressive defensive walls and towers.
After parking, we decided to skip the shuttle bus and enjoy the approximately 20-minute walk to the entrance. It proved to be a pleasant stroll, although by the end of the day we would certainly appreciate the shuttle ride back!
Warwick Castle was bustling with visitors of all ages. It quickly became clear why it is one of England’s most popular castles. Beyond the historic buildings, there are gardens, demonstrations, family activities, and expansive grounds that make it easy to spend an entire day exploring.

The Great Hall and State Rooms
Our self-guided tour began in the magnificent Great Hall, the castle’s largest room. Lined with impressive collections of swords, armor, shields, and other medieval weapons, it immediately transported us back through centuries of English history.
One fascinating piece of history we learned was that the Great Hall had once been destroyed by fire. Rather than abandoning it, the owners painstakingly restored it to its former grandeur in 1871, preserving the remarkable room visitors admire today.
From there we wandered through the beautifully decorated State Rooms, which tell the story of the castle’s transformation over several centuries. The exhibits chronicle life at Warwick Castle from the 16th century through the late 20th century, illustrating how generations of noble families adapted the castle from a military fortress into a grand country estate.

Walking Along the River Avon
After touring the castle itself, we explored the surrounding grounds and eventually made our way to the Mill & Engine House beside the River Avon.
Fun Fact
One amusing fact we learned during the visit: “Avon” actually means “river.” So the River Avon literally translates to “River River.” Sometimes history has a sense of humor.
The mill originally served a very practical purpose by grinding corn for the estate. Over the years, however, it evolved into something much more sophisticated. Later improvements allowed it to generate power for plumbing and eventually electricity throughout the castle.
Inside, several generations of pumping equipment are displayed, ranging from early mechanical systems to gas-powered and electric pumps. It was an interesting reminder that castles weren’t simply frozen in medieval times—they continually adapted to new technology over the centuries.
By the time we finished exploring the grounds, our legs had definitely logged enough miles for the day. This time we happily accepted the shuttle ride back to the parking lot.

An Unexpected Evening at Ludlow Castle
After enjoying a relaxing lunch in the charming town of Warwick, we drove south to Ludlow Castle.
Our original plan had been simple: explore the castle ruins. Instead…we got Rick Rolled!
As it turned out, Ludlow Castle was hosting an evening concert series, and the castle grounds were closed for performances all week. Fortunately, we discovered this while planning our visit, so instead of changing our itinerary, we purchased tickets to see Rick Astley perform and ended up enjoying one of the most unique experiences of our entire trip.
We even splurged on premium tickets, which allowed us to wander through portions of the castle ruins during the opening acts before the main performance. General admission guests watched from the large outer courtyard while we enjoyed exploring the historic setting.
Seeing a live concert inside the walls of a medieval castle was a surreal experience. Ancient stone ruins surrounded a modern stage complete with lighting, giant video screens, and thousands of fans singing along.
Rick Astley delivered far more than just his famous hit. Along with his popular 80s hits, he mixed in newer songs and surprised the audience by sitting behind the drum kit for several numbers. One of the evening’s highlights came when he performed some AC/DC songs, admitting he’d always dreamed of playing for the legendary rock band. Needless to say, the crowd loved every minute of it.

Ending the Day Completely Exhausted
After spending the morning climbing towers and walking castle grounds, followed by an energetic evening concert inside another medieval castle, we were absolutely exhausted.
It was one of those perfect travel days that combined history, architecture, beautiful scenery, unexpected entertainment, and memories we’ll be talking about for years. We had planned to visit two castles—but we certainly hadn’t planned on ending the night singing along to 1980s classics inside one of them.
